What is the most hassle free antivirus program out there?

Here are the hassles I'm trying to avoid:

* high resource usage (Panda Software)

* a virus disabling the antivirus (Norton)

* Internet Explorer dependencies (Mcafee)

* bad tech support (almost every antivirus vendor)

* firewall or antivirus pop-ups (systray notification is fine)

Ideally, the vendor would have forums, user-submitted documentation and other mechanisms short of contacting technical support to solve problems, and a bug reporting form.

If the answer is Trend Micro, will someone please help me find someone who can support it free of charge without my having to call them? The spyware scan seems inconsistent sometimes finding things sometimes not (2 minutes of each other), it has trouble removing TSPY.SN and keeps popping up to tell me it found TSPY.SN creating what is essentially an infinite loop.

When I boot into safe mode, the product fails to work properly.

Ideally, I would want a security suite.

Norton is pretty hassel free if you've got enough system resources for it not to be a problem. Updates by it self, does the job, and besides if you have a NT OS system resources aren't something you've gotta worry about as much anyway. At least not as much as you do with windows 98, which was a nice OS for the time but basicly screws you over with the OS system resources running out and thus forcing you to restart everytime this happens.

I'd recommend McAfee Security Suite. It is not dependent on IE. It has a real simple User Interface (UI). Norton's UI is not as good as McAfee's but, is a second best. You can turn alerts to the way you want. Standard though, is where a little alert pops up in the system tray and the goes away, (also it does take up about 1/8 of the screen).

avg is very effective. However, when you scan a compressed file it will only scan the files that are visible. You should have opened the compressed folder and scanned again so that all the files were visable.

AVG, Avast, or Antivir. Antivir has the best overall detection of any of the free antiviruses, but does have a pop up screen during updates that some people find annoying. If not use AVG don't listen to people that say AVG sucks, cause it doesn't. It has approximately a 96% detection rate, same as Avast and it has a scheduled scan unlike Avast. If you want a slow running computer just download Kaspersky or Zone Alarm, they're worst than the viruses themselves. Also I would recommned getting a good antispyware like Spyware Doctor Starter Edition which is free, AVG antispyware which is free, and/or Adaware and you'll be fine.

I have tested and used AVG, ANTIVIR and AVAST, they all work really well and don't slow the system down to a crawl like mcafee and norton. Also unlike norton and mcafee I have never had an issue trying to remove any one of those 3 from a customers computer. I did have some issues with my favourite of the 3 Avast not playing well with ZoneAlarm free firewall, the best software firewall on the market, free or otherwise.

NOD32 by the way isn't free. So that doesn't answer the question.

McAfee, Norton, and PCCillian are all good choices if you want to buy a product, but it really isn't necessary.
AVG. But it also helps to have a firefall and other programs to help protect against viruses.

AVG should be compatible, if not then get free Zonealarm. Strongest firewall ever! 99% viruses come from the internet, and as long as you downlaod from legit websites, you are safe. Zonealarm even lets you let specific programs run with the inernet or not. dont be overwhelmed with te options, play around a little to get the hand of it. antivirus isnt really necassary unless you download ALOT of .exe files from the internet. Zonealarm should keep you safe till AVG is compatible with vista.

If you want the best free antivirus currently out there that is high detection and removal then avira antivir personal free is the best choice. If you want a simple basic protection then go with what others suggest - AVG free. If you are a computer expert then avast home edition is for you. It is a good free antivirus but has generates more false positives than any other antivirus.

On firewalls, Online armor free and comodo firewall pro free are the best even besting commercial ones on matousec tests (one of the more trusted independent testers even of firewall companies). If you want it simple then kerio firewall 4 or ghostwall should be enough.
AVG free AV is very popular but it's hard to understand why as it has poor detection rates and big gaps in the protection it provides. Yes, you will have to uninstall Norton as running 2 different anti-virus software could cause problems. I use AOL active virus scan, but AVG anti-virus also gets good reviews. Both offer real time protection and auto update frequently.

Regarding anti virus / anti spy ware programmes, none of them are 100% fool proof. They need to be constantly updated via internet. You must also know that updates will be released by the vendor only after viruses starts infecting the system.

The best way to protect your system is by good browsing habits.

Any anti virus scanner will do the job as long as you keep them up to date with antivirus definitions. I personally would pump for zone alarm which comes with an excellent antivirus and security feature. It has a free version also.

PC Tools Antivirus is not a very bad program. It has a background scanner and daily updates (which can sometimes get annoying), and you can choose which type of scan to do. However, the scans are not always very thorough and do not detect malicious programs that infect the registry. You can use it as your default scanner, but you'd still have to be careful.
i'd get AVG it's free and a very good anti-virus. you might also want a good anti-spyware tool like Ad-Aware as well

You will have to change the settings in Norton. Norton uses a plugin for microsoft office, you can disable it by going into options -%26gt; miscellaneous -%26gt; uncheck 'enable office plugin
